Astroproject: From Dust to Stars

Astroproject is an initiative to develop a documentary series on Astronomy, Astrophysics and Space Science related research in India. The project received sanction from the International Astronomical Unions Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD). The documentary series aims to record and document the various aspects of research and development in the field of Astronomy,
Astrophysics and Space Science in India and also highlight the facilities in terms of research laboratories, observatories and state of the art instrumentation. It intends to highlight the contribution of Astronomers, Astrophysicists and Space scientists in India who have contributed immensely towards a new outlook of the Universe today.
“From Dust to Stars” is our first film of the series of our ongoing project Astroproject. This infotainment film with a runtime of 30 mins takes you on an enriching journey of how stars are formed. It introduces to the audience the basic concepts of Astronomy by answering questions like, why do some stars shine brighter than the others?what is the reason for them having different colours ? It also showcases one of the highest altitude observatories in the world “ Indian Astronomical Observatory” at Hanle, Ladakh which is situated at an altitude of 15,000 feet above the msl.

Rakesh Rao, a science enthusiast and film maker who specialises in making scientific documentaries. He has been involved in many projects, the latest one involved in spending 14 months over a span of 3 years in the icy continent of Antarctica to film the construction of the third Indian Scientific Station ‘BHARATI’ at Larsemann hill, Antarctica. He is currently involved in developing a documentary series on Astronomy Research in India- “Astroproject”. The project is supported by the International Astronomical Union’s Office of Astronomy for Development. He has also been activity involved for the last 16 years in promoting Astronomy in schools and colleges across the country. His work is specifically directed in creating images and videos that helps to educate the masses about science, environment and technology. He was also part of the NASA spaceward Bound India Expedition to high altitudes of Ladakh region. The Expedition involved documenting Extremophiles living in extreme conditions of Ladakh.
