WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Awareness through Movement is based on verbally guided lessons experienced in groups.
These precisely structured movement explorations involve thinking, sensing, feeling, moving, and imagining. The emphasis is on learning which movements work better and noticing the quality of these changes in your body. Through increased awareness, you will learn to abandon unnecessary habitual patterns of movements and develop new alternatives, resulting in improved flexibility and coordination.

The Feldenkrais Method was originated by Dr Moshé Feldenkrais, (1904-1984), a Ukrainian-born Jewish physicist and judo practitioner who moved to Israel and eventually became an Israeli. He presented a view that good health means functioning well, working well, having satisfying relationships with emotional maturity, able to access a full range of responses to any situation (“Awareness through Movement”)- this is opposed to medical health as in not ‘sick or disabled’ or health in any abstract sense. He asserted that this method of body/mind exploration leads to improved functioning (health) through individuals becoming more aware and finding improved use.

“ What I’m after is more flexible minds, not just flexible bodies.”

– Dr Moshé Feldenkrais

In Michel’s words, “… the method can be taught in 2 ways, personal sessions where the practitioner accompanies a person in their body mind exploration, with gentle and informative touch, or in group sessions, where participants are guided verbaly through movement sequences, in a very respectful way, with the invitation to move slow, in presence, sensing, observing… becoming more aware of unecessary efforts and habits…by doing so, doing less in this process of self discrimination, you will discover more ease (and options) in yours actions, and in your interaction with the world… Starting fresh, by becoming who you really are, finding what you really want for a full participation in Life… Finding your own Dance…”

ABOUT THE FACULTY

Michel Casanovas is a dancer, choreographer and Feldenkrais practitioner. He has studied Ballet and Contemporary Dance. In 1981, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in dance at the conservatory of Toulouse, France. He has worked as a professional dancer in different theatres and companies in France, Belgium and Switzerland. Since 1996 he has been the co-founder, dancer and choreographer of the dance company Morespace, Basel (Switzerland). In 2015 he founded the ONA association in Collioure (South of France). In the dance theatre movement, his solo work “Le Corps Déporté”, has been performed in Switzerland, France, Netherlands and Germany. Since 2006, Michel has been regularly teaching Contemporary dance, Improvisation and the Feldenkrais method in India.
His work has taken him to Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi and more, where he has also directed research workshops, residencies for artists and worked with children with special needs.

His choreographic work reveals a sensitive approach, often poetics of the dance and beyond only the physical aspect. In a constant search for a “true” gesture of expression, of a spontaneous movement between elaborated structure and improvisation, this approach opens a space where the interpreters can express and share their strength, as well as their fragility, in resonance with their hearing

WHO IS IT FOR?

The Feldenkrais Method is finding a home in every field in which there exists a relationship between elements of intention, skill, creativity and physical movement. In sport training, in music and music education, in dance and dance education, and in the theater arts the Feldenkrais Method is increasingly acclaimed as a valuable and pertinent means of education.

Whether for the therapist, teacher, performing artist, athlete – or simply anyone (everyone) – the Feldenkrais Method offers a simple and yet a sophisticated and profound means for discovering physical and emotional resilience, strength, and self-possession.
